The connection to Southern Miss came from new offensive coordinator recently brought in, Coach Arroyo.
"Coach Arroyo offered me Saturday," he said in an interview tonight with GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I know he recruited one of my teammates from High School to Wyoming, so he kept in contact with my coach there."
Southern Miss is a program that he has certainly heard of, but he really didn't know a lot about. He knows that will change, however.
"I always saw them in the bowl games and I know they always would win," he said. "I have seen them play in some big games, but I am not real familiar with the school yet.
"I am setting up a visit later this month or the first weekend in February."
Lyons would fit a position of need right away for the Eagles.
"They see me as an outside linebacker," he said. "I play fast, physical, and I am always around the ball.
"I had a good season even though I missed the first three games because of some paperwork issues. But overall, I was real happy with my season."
Lyons has played only one season with Pierce, and he'll have three to play three.
He also holds offers from UNLV, Nevada, Wyoming, Hawaii, and Houston in addition to Southern Miss. He said Southern Miss, Houston, and Nevada are recruiting him the hardest. He has plans to visit UNLV and Nevada along with a trip to Hattiesburg.
There are a few things he is looking for when narrowing down his decision.
"I want a place I can have the opportunity to come in and compete for a starting job right away," he said. "Also, I want a place I can call home and that has a nice feel."
Lyons has heard from Coach Duggan as well as Coach Arroyo, and says he is very interested in what he is hearing from the Eagles.
He doesn't plan on making a decision until after taking his full slate of visits.
