After the final buzzer sounded in Hawaii's opening round loss to UC Irvine in the Big West tournament, I'd all but given up hope. Sure the season went better than I thought at its outset, but I figured that we'd still have needed to win at least 19 (and likely) 20 games to sniff a postseason berth. That turned out, however, not to be the case, as it was announced today that Hawaii was one of the 32 teams selected to participate in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Yes, you read that right. Not only did Hawaii get invited to the tournament for the second consecutive year, they got asked to HOST a game! HOST!! Suffice it to say I was very surprised and very, VERY excited to make plans to go (as I'm sure you are too.)
This invitation was likely due in large part to the influence of former Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace, who is the chairman of the selection committee for the tournament. I imagine that it also helps that when selected for the game last year, Hawaii sold quite a few tickets and helped the tournament turn a nice profit. (Ironically enough, three Big West teams including Hawaii were selected to play in the tournament, a list that also included the aforementioned UCI. (Cal Poly is the other) I really do hope that everyone can make some time on Wednesday to come to the game. Basketball traditions don't get started overnight and, when full, Stan Sheriff gives the team one of the best home court advantages in the entire country.
