Willis Wilson Joins UH

Willis Wilson Joins UH

Willis Wilson, a running back with the Washington Huskies the past three years, is set to join the Rainbow Warriors. There are several procedural steps that need to be cleared before it becomes official. If all goes according to plan, by joining as an initial walk-on, Wilson is expected to be eligible to play this coming season.

Steven Tsai reported yesterday that former UW Husky Tailback Willis Wilson was going to be joining the Hawaii football team and, if all goes well, he'll be eligible to play as soon as this season (the requirement that transferring players sit out a season only applies to those who were on scholarship. Because Willis was a walk on at UW, and intends to walk on at UH, he will have no such restriction placed on him.)

At first glance, its pretty easy to see that UH has done extremely well in the past with other college's castaways (Colt, Davone, Pisa, etc.) so I'm hopeful that this trend will continue with Willis here as well, mostly because he's not without his own baggage. Last August while at UW, he was reportedly dismissed from the team for a "violation of team rules" (which went unspecified as these things usually do). Apparently after his dismissal, Coach Sark had a "change of heart" and decided to reinstate Wilson, along with H-Back Josh Perkins.

We gathered some more information on the situation and it felt like the right thing to do. We met with some of the leaders on the team, felt like the right thing to do. Their punishment will be handled in-house and I think that they are thankful for the opportunity to get back and I think that their teammates happy to have them back. – Steve Sarkisian

Although Willis had yet to see any game action at that point (he'd been in the program for two years), beat writers were apparently very high on his practice performances. The undisclosed violation worries me a little bit though. As we've learned from Johnny Manziel, violation of team rules can be someone as severe as a bar fight, which is definitely not the kind of mistakes we want our players making here, particularly after the rash of drunk driving arrests that happened last summer. Still, everyone deserves a second chance, and with running back being such an important part of Norm's offense, it's great that we're developing some real depth at the position (in addition to Diocemy Saint Juste, there's also the incumbents Joey Iosefa and Lakalaka) Here's a highlight tape if Wilson from high school, just in case you were curious. Welcome aboard Willis!
