Birmingham papers lukewarm about
'leading candidate' Frazier's KO punch

HONOLULU – Herman Frazier's name has raised eyebrows, even hopes, for University of Hawaii at Manoa fans.
Back in Birmingham, Alabama, however, there are questions about Frazier's actual production. For better or worse, perhaps even unfairly, Frazier's sudden rise in exposure -- his name has now appeared on candidate lists at two schools -- has left a door open to speculation and analysis.
The Birmingham Post-Dispatch ran both a report and editorial in today's edition, noting that Frazier may have been undermined by his own Board of Trustees at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
The Birmingham News, meanwhile, believes that Frazier simply wasn't a good fit at a school that relished the leadership of Gene Bartow for decades.
The UH Board of Regents meets in committee Thursday and is expected to announced its recommended candidate Friday.
The two reported leading candidates are Frazier and Montana's Wayne Hogan. While Hogan is not flying in for an interview, Frazier arrived in the islands Tuesday.
