Warrior Volleyball: Opens season with easy win

Hawaii downs Lewis in three games to begin defense of their national crown.

The University of Hawaii Warrior volleyball team opened defense of their national championship Wednesday evening in very convincing fashion.

The Men of War swept Lewis in three straight, 30-17, 30-21, 30-22 to open up the 2003 season with a huge exclamation point.

The Warriors Costas Theocharidis had 14 kills to lead a balanced Hawaii attack.  Delano Thomas added 12 kills and Eyal Zimet contributed 10 kills of his own.

Hawaii dominated from the opening serve over a very experienced Lewis squad that is one of the favorites this year in MIVA.

The Warriors out hit the Flyers an incredible .551 to .172. UH also out blocked Lewis 6 to 3.

The two teams will meet again Friday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is set for 7:05 p.m.
